And when I press here, do you feel it radiating anywhere?" AI can suggest treatment plans. It cannot lay hands on a patient.

Embedded systems engineers, FPGA engineers, automotive hardware engineers, power electronics engineers, RF engineers. These are the jobs that happen at the boundary between software and physics. You're debugging with an oscilloscope, a logic analyzer, and a soldering iron. The problems involve signal integrity, thermal management, electromagnetic interference — real physical phenomena that don't care about your language model. FPGA in particular: if AI could do this job, literally every other white-collar job would already be gone. The debugging workflow for an FPGA involves staring at waveform diagrams and thinking "why is this clock domain crossing failing intermittently at this specific temperature range." That's not a prompt-engineering problem.

On-site field application engineers, industrial software implementation, MES system deployment, data center delivery consultants. These jobs require physical presence at customer sites, dealing with legacy systems that were installed before you were born, integrating with equipment that has no documentation because the original manufacturer went out of business in 2003. The actual work is 30% technical and 70% diplomacy. You're negotiating with the factory manager who doesn't want you touching his production line during operating hours. AI can't buy that guy coffee and convince him to give you a four-hour maintenance window.

The Pattern Worth Paying Attention To

1. Physical presence in uncontrolled environments. The real world is messy, variable, and nothing like a training dataset. Every house, every patient, every engine bay is a unique configuration of problems that have never existed in exactly this combination before.

2. Abstract judgment and aesthetic negotiation. "Make it look good" means something different to every client. "Cut it, but not too short" is a negotiation, not a specification. These jobs involve translating vague human desires into concrete physical outcomes through a back-and-forth that requires empathy, taste, and the ability to read the room.

3. Legal and ethical liability. Who do you sue when the AI surgeon kills someone? The hospital? The AI company? The engineer who trained the model? Until liability chains are legally established — which will take decades of legislation and case law — humans will remain the legally required decision-makers in high-stakes professions.

What This Means For You

If your job happens entirely on a computer, AI is coming for at least part of it. Not necessarily the whole job, but enough tasks that the number of people needed to do the work will shrink. This is already visible in junior developer hiring, entry-level copywriting, paralegal work, and data analysis.

If your job requires you to be in a specific physical place, dealing with a specific messy situation, making judgment calls that involve taste or trust or liability — you have a much longer runway. Not infinite. But long enough to plan, adapt, and decide what's next on your terms rather than AI's.

The safest career strategy right now isn't picking the right job. It's building the ability to learn, adapt, and work alongside AI rather than competing with it directly. The people I worry about aren't the ones doing any specific job. They're the ones who stopped learning.

So should I quit my desk job and become an electrician?

Not necessarily. But if you're early in your career and choosing between a path that's 100% screen-based vs. one that involves physical-world skills, the latter probably has a longer runway. The electricians I talked to aren't worried about AI. The junior copywriters are.

What about programming? You said embedded and FPGA are safe — what about web developers?

Web development is getting squeezed from the bottom. AI is very good at generating CRUD apps, React components, API endpoints. The demand for junior and mid-level generalist developers is dropping. The gap between "can build a todo app with AI" and "can ship and maintain a production system serving millions of users" is enormous.
